On the Road with Ikon Pass :: Steamboat Springs, CO

If you’ve followed along with my adventures via Instagram, it will come as no surprise when I say that Colorado is one of my favorite ski destinations in the U.S. Of course, with my Ikon Pass, it’s easy to experience the mountains in this state - the pass unlocks snow day magic to six different resorts! One in particular that is near and dear to my heart is Steamboat Springs.
Located in Northwest Colorado, Steamboat Springs is a mountain destination steeped in history. Well known for its ranching heritage, remnants of the Old West can still be found around town. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a cowboy on skis.
With 170 trails spanning across 2,965 acres of terrain, the possibilities are seemingly endless on a powder day. Receiving an average 314" of snowfall per season, it’s easy to see how the term, Champagne Powder ®, was coined in Steamboat (and this is the only place you’ll find it!). For the past three seasons, I’ve experienced this destination in multiple conditions - from early season, spring season, and even smack in the middle. No matter the timing, there’s always a new way to explore - both on and off mountain!
Early Season at Steamboat
From opening day through the holidays, it’s always a gamble on terrain availability and conditions. Building up a base relies on natural snow and snowmaking (which covers 375 acres), so be prepared for thin cover and icy conditions. The plus side to less trails means that the mountain and town see less crowds.
During this past visit in December, we skied in the morning, and kept our afternoons open to explore off mountain. Something not to be missed while in town is a trip to the hot springs! Right along the Main Street you’ll find Old Town Hot Springs, but for the real natural hot spring experience, it’s worth venturing out to Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Make sure to reserve your spot before heading out there. Time slots are limited and fill up quickly.
Peak Season
During peak season, Steamboat’s après ski scene is not to be missed. Timber & Torch is a personal fave, offering drinks, food, and picturesque views right from the base of the gondola. Make sure to also try to track down Taco Beast, an on-mountain snow cat that serves tacos and drinks! If you’re visiting with family (or friends who are more excited for the APRÈS portion of the ski day), make sure to take a ride on the Outlaw Mountain Coaster . One of my favorite things about Steamboat - they have night skiing!
Steamboat is also known for playing host to the bluegrass music festival, WinterWonderGrass. I was able to attend back in 2020, and had such a blast! It was so fun to ski to the stage ON mountain, and watch the sun set from the main stage. Next month the festival returns after a Covid hiatus, you can check out more info on dates here !
Spring Season
While April back East typically means bare patches and slush puddles, it’s a different story in the Rockies. Last spring was celebrated with powder runs in the trees (the trails in Morningside Park are my go-to!), warmer temps, and extra hours of sunshine. Aka :: a total DREAM.
Traveling to Steamboat
By car, it’s an easy three hour drive from Denver. There are also direct flights from multiple cities to nearby Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN). For lodging, the Steamboat Grand offers luxurious and modern accommodations, with rentals, a spa, bar and restaurant on site. Make sure to checkout the Champagne Powder Package for discounted rates on lift tickets and lodging! As always, your Ikon Pass has its own perks, from friends and family tickets to resort dining and retail deals.
