A Winter Road Trip with GMC's 22 Yukon AT4

By now I’m sure it’s obvious how much I love a good road trip adventure. There’s something to be said about making up your own itinerary and schedule as you go - in fact, doing so is considered “intuitive travel” , and is a method I’ve stuck with for a couple years now. You can read more on the basics here, but it basically comes down to :: you have an allotted amount of time set aside for your trip, and have the basics booked. But beyond that, you go with your gut!

When I approached my friends over at GMC with the idea of doing an extended trip (I planned on being on the road for about a month, or more accurately, 1 area per week for four weeks - the first in the Northwest, second in Montana, third in Utah, and fourth in California). I gave them this rough itinerary with bullet point requests :: I’d need a vehicle that could comfortably handle both long stretches of highway and off-road adventures, has tons of interior space, charging ports, and the capability of going up against all types of weather conditions. They came back to me with their ‘22 Yukon AT4.

After test driving several other models in GMC’s lineup (the Sierra was the first truck I ever drove!), I knew that the Yukon AT4 would be up to any challenge I brought its way. Even with my giant suitcase, boot bag, and skis piled in - there was AMPLE space left over for passengers. Since this was a full on winter road trip, I didn’t test out the SUV’s car camping capabilities, but I’m sure it would be quite cozy! Plus with the panoramic sunroof with dual panes would make for some truly incredible stargazing.

Of course, I HAD to test out the Yukon AT4’s off roading capabilities while in Montana! A friend of mine made an afternoon of it, and even though I never got deep enough in the snow, I knew I was covered with Horizontal Red Recovery Hooks, 20" 6-Spoke Machined Aluminum Wheels and Goodyear® All-Terrain Tires if I DID happen to get stuck!

With the Yukon able to handle all the terrain and weather conditions it went up against (from sandy beaches in Oregon to snowy mountain roads in Utah - snow squalls and sand storms….) I had full trust in it getting me safely from point A to B. And with a super comfy interior - complete with ample charging (this is HUGE for photo missions, when batteries need to be good to go at all times!), premium leather seating surfaces - with both heated and ventilated driver and front-passenger seats, a 10.2” Infotainment system with Google Built-In, along with an available WiFi Hotspot, and dual 12.6” Rear-Seat Media Touch-Screens. Basically, the Yukon not only acted as my mode of transportation, but also my home office for the month!

With over 3,000 miles of road covered on this journey, it’s safe to say that the Yukon AT4 and I got very well acquainted. Standouts for the vehicle :: the ease of switching from 2 to 4WD, the Head-Up Display that shows speed, tachometer, mobile alerts, available navigation (and more), LED headlamps (and taillamps with the GMC signature design that lights up when you get close to the vehicle!), and overall comfort of the interior.
